The Giant of Storage: Technical Overview of Bath County PSH

IThe Bath County Pumped Storage Station is a true engineering marvel. It is located in Virginia, USA. Many experts call it the «World’s Largest Battery.» In fact, it has a massive capacity of 3,003 MW. Therefore, it plays a critical role in stabilizing the US power grid.

Technical Specifications First of all, let’s look at the core numbers. The station operates with a net head of 385 meters. Furthermore, it achieves a cycle efficiency of 80%. As a result, energy loss is kept to a minimum. The reservoirs can store over 24,000 MWh. Consequently, the station can power 750,000 homes for ten hours.

The Powerhouse and Turbines The facility uses six reversible Francis-type turbines. Each unit provides about 500 MW of power. Additionally, these machines work as both pumps and generators. Engineering Challenges Construction was a difficult task. It lasted from 1977 to 1985. During this time, workers moved 15 million cubic meters of rock. Moreover, the upper reservoir required special sealing. Engineers used grouting curtains to stop leaks. Because of this technology, the station remains safe and dry today.
